EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) has awarded a Gold rating to the entire line of HP workstations, making HP the first in this category to achieve EPEAT’s highest product rating.
The EPEAT system and environmental criteria were developed in a 2-year multi-stakeholder process that was facilitated by the Zero Waste Alliance on a grant from the U.S. EPA, including HP. On January 24, 2007, President Bush signed Executive Order 13423 mandating federal agencies to buy EPEAT registered products. As a result, it is gaining more and more momentum in the Federal marketplace.
EPEAT rates desktop computers, laptops and monitors based on 51 environmental elements in eight broad categories:
  • Reduction/Elimination of environmentally sensitive materials
  • Material selection
  • Design for end-of-life
  • Product longevity/Life-cycle extension
  • Energy conservation
  • End of life management
  • Corporate performance
  • Packaging
Moreover, EPEAT evaluates electronic products according to three categories of environmental performance:
  • Bronze - Product meets all required criteria
  • Sliver - Product meets all required criteria plus at least 50% optional criteria
  • Gold - Product meets all required criteria plus at least 75% optional criteria
The complete set of criteria includes 23 required criteria (i.e., all criteria must be met to achieve the baseline “Bronze” EPEAT rating) and 28 optional criteria (i.e. producers can pick and choose among these criteria to boost their EPEAT baseline “score” and achieve a higher rating.)
EPEAT has only been active for just over one year, but already hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. federal procurement reference EPEAT in the contracts and request for purchase documents.
Environmental Protection Agency officials have distributed sample contract language for soliciting EPEAT approved hardware to federal IT procurement divisions. The agency is also publicizing the benchmark to managers of all federal government wide acquisition contracts.
